Initiating Activation in Diabetes Self-Management From Patients’ Perspective

Patients’ active role is crucial in managing chronic illnesses like type 2 diabetes. Current evidence demonstrated patients who were activated had better clinical outcomes. Some factors influencing patient activation have been identified but there little knowledge on how successfully start to take their This study aimed explore begin activate themselves self-management. The narrative inquiry was taken as the qualitative methodological approach. Ten participants with diabetes purposively sampled from a public primary care clinic Malaysia. In-depth interviews conducted and recorded. data analysed thematic analysis. Three themes four subthemes generated. first theme, “Learning what do” describes learning process social networks healthcare professionals that helped define role. second theme highlighted wished for gradual approach initiating activation, i.e. “Taking one step at time”. They started more straightforward self-management task needed time up third pointed out when could not perform certain tasks, they would engage someone else help: “Engaging challenging tasks.” In conclusion, education substantial developing ‘patient activation,’ patient’s ability self-manage. plan should also be realistic suit patients’ circumstances. Having health partner or buddy among family members peers helpful trying adopt good dietary habits regular exercise.
